Counseling Psychology

The Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Maryland is a collaborative program jointly housed in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education and the Department of Psychology. Our program is one of the oldest in the nation and has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1953. In independent evaluations over the past three decades, the University of Maryland is always among the very top ranked counseling psychology programs in the United States. Our faculty represent a broad range of research interests, including psychotherapy process and outcome research, multicultural psychology, vocational psychology, and interpersonal relationships.

The University of Maryland at College Park is ranked No. 22 among public universities in the United States. Located approximately 30 minutes from both Washington, DC and Baltimore, Maryland, the range of opportunities afforded to students outside of the classroom are extensive.

Our students are integral to the ongoing strength and vitality of our program. We are interested in attracting students with strong academic records, a commitment to being trained in a scientist-practitioner model, and diverse life experiences. Prospective students may apply to our program through either of the two departments in which we are housed. If an applicant hopes to work with a specific faculty member in our program, we recommend that the person apply through the department with which that faculty member is affiliated.
